Hammock Profile

Hammock is the ambient / post-rock project of composers Marc Byrd and Andrew Thompson. They debuted Hammock in early 2005 with the full length album Kenotic. Since their debut, Hammock released an EP in mid-2005 called Stranded Under Endless Sky, and the sleep-over series Volume One six months later in early 2006. In November 2006, Hammock released the full-length follow up to “Kenotic”, Raising Your Voice…Trying to Stop an Echo on Darla Records.

In January, 2008 Hammock announced that their next full-length, a special release titled Maybe They Will Sing for Us Tomorrow would appear in May, 2008 and that the six-panel digipak for the record would feature original artwork by Riceboy Sleeps ( an art collaboration between Jonsi Birgisson of Sigur Ros and Alex Somers of Parachutes ). A majority of Hammock’s music is ambient instrumental, save for a few tracks on Kenotic that feature haunting ethereal vocals. Their sound is “sleepier” than the brash, often obvious crescendos of their post-rocker cousins, reminiscent of 80’s Brian Eno and early 90’s Nick McCabe of the band The Verve. Much of the later Hammock albums have been more instrumental and meditative, as on Marc Byrd’s conceptual album The Sleep-Over Series. Hammock has also been featured on NPR (National Public Radio), and tracks from the album Kenotic were used by NBC during the 2006 winter Olympics coverage.

Legends "Steve Kilbey" and "timEbandit Powles" of [ The Church ] collaborate with Ambient masters Hammock on "No Agenda" and "Verse for Forgiveness". Also includes two new Hammock songs. "PasteMagazine.COM" The experimental, ambient rock that Nashville-based Hammock has released over the years has left a lingering desire to hear more and more of the soundscape created by Marc Byrd and Andrew Thompson. Their most recent effort provides exactly that and gives listeners the chance to hear two previously released songs like they had never been heard before as well as two brand new releases.

Asleep in the Downlights offers the chance to hear previously instrumental tracks with staggering lyrics that add another layer to the ambience. “No Agenda” and “Verse for Forgiveness” feature Steve Kilbey and Tim “timEbandit” Powles on each track respectively. Both are members of the Church, a band that Hammock has been fans of for ages. The collaboration between the musicians is unique because each of the four tracks features a different vocalist. Byrd and Thompson each sing on one of the new songs which gives the album a vastly different take on cohesiveness. Every song is tied together on more than just a superficial level. Hammock has provided music that looms in the background of your mind with a sense of urgent openness, wonder and beauty. Even though Asleep is only four songs long, there is a vast amount of ground covered over the 20-plus minutes of music. It’s the mixture of the four individual vocalists that offers a looming sense of surrealism even more so than they had previously put forward in the past.

About Departure Songs:

Departure Songs is Hammock's fifth LP and first double album. It was mixed by Tim Powles [ The Church ], mastered by Taylor Deupree [ solo artist and 12K ] and features contributions by Keith Kenniff [ Helios, Goldmund ]. Hammock go massive as they meditate on grand themes of death and loss, their music ever larger, more expansive. Every song a mountaintop vista with a clear view to the horizon, unencumbered by clouds, in all directions. Departure Songs demands that it be played loudly so that the details in each track can breathe, whether it is the androgynous, falsetto vocals of Marc Byrd or the angelic voice of Christine Glass Byrd or just a little bit of guitar in the background, this record is nuanced in a most compelling fashion. The arrangements beg to be picked apart - soaring guitars, propulsive bass, and hypnotic strings. The vocals work wonderfully as an instrument, but when the words finally become understandable, they cause shivers.

Departure Songs is an album about being there and not being there. And how it feels to both be there and have someone else not be there. Presence and absence. Love and grief. Hammock’s music has always been a balm for troubled hearts in troubled times - and here the troubled times are their own. This is intensely personal music, and we are lucky that Hammock will let us listen in.

Not as fragile as previous efforts, Departure Songs shows a more mature songwriting, more assured production, a fuller approach to crafting music. Hammock retains its signature approach to epic music-making, but this time out, herald their muse in all capital letters, with cinematic crescendos and an architect’s ear for structure both within a song and as a sequence of songs. The quiet, more ambient tracks act as both underline and counterbalance to the bigger tracks. Hammock’s greatest success as musicians is to make music that is, at its heart, completely the saddest music ever made but expressed in a manner that is ecstatic. This is what makes Hammock special - ecstasy through exquisite sadness. Epiphany. __[ Words by James Mason ].

[ Oblivion Hymns ]. This November, Nashville duo Hammock will release Oblivion Hymns, their most ambitious recording to date. Hammock reaches as far as they ever have, adding a string quartet, children’s choir, accordion, French horn, glockenspiel, and more to their growing arsenal of instrumentation. Coupled with their familiar bank of guitars and effects, the end result is a special kind of magic waiting to be experienced, not simply listened to.

Oblivion Hymns redefines what listeners have come to expect from a Hammock record, leaving all traces of traditional rock or pop far behind and introducing the band’s unique take on neoclassical music. Bathed in intricate layers of sweeping strings, strident horns, and delicately pressed keys, Oblivion Hymns rides a cascade of sound to the farthest-reaching corners of your heart and delivers a deep emotional connection, capable of ferreting out the most precious of memories.

Oblivion Hymns is best described as an expedition across sight and sound. You won’t know where you’re headed, and you’re bound to feel drained by the end, but wherever you arrive, the journey will have been unforgettable. For over eight years, Marc Byrd and Andrew Thompson of Hammock have been crafting sophisticated and emotionally-charged compositions together, culminating in the release of five critically-acclaimed full-length albums. Oblivion Hymns is the follow-up to 2012’s Departure Songs, a bold nineteen-track orchestration that received Album of the Year nods by several media outlets.

Hammock has emerged as a standout in the ambient/post-rock space, creating rich, textured compositions that challenge the limits of the genre and push it forward. The band has received significant acclaim from influential media, such as BBC, Pitchfork, NPR, and The Wire. The cinematic quality of Hammock’s music has not gone unnoticed by mainstream media, translating into many licensing credits, including Super Bowl XLVII, Showtime’s “Californication”, the 2006 Winter Olympics, and ABC’s “Dirty Sexy Money.”

Review for the album "These are truly the last days" from These are truly the last days

These Are Truly The Last Days is a musical project with a driven experimental twist. Their music blurs the lines between various genres, including ambient, electronica, glitch hop, and more. The project’s self-titled studio effort features 11 studio tracks.

Review for OVUM by Chronotope Project

Crafting a concept album is an incredibly difficult task. Tying together a cohesive narrative across a record’s worth of songs isn’t just daunting, it’s an endeavour that even some of the industry’s finest have failed to do memorably. This task, however, becomes notably more difficult when you’re dealing in the abstract via instrumental soundscapes. That is what Chronotope Project, the moniker of composer Jeffrey Ericson Allen, attempts to do with his latest project, ‘Ovum.’
