Pelican Profile

Chicago, United States (2001 – present)

Rising from the ashes of the band [ Tusk ], the instrumental post-metal outfit Pelican formed in Chicago, 2001, by guitarists Trevor de Brauw and Laurent Lebec with sibling rhythm section Larry Herweg and Bryan Herweg (drums and bass, respectively). Owing a great debt to pioneering forefathers [ Neurosis ] and often compared to Boston’s [ Isis ] and Sweden’s [ Cult of Luna ] Pelican were initially signed to Hydra Head Records (whose head, Aaron Turner, is a member of Isis).

After making their debut with an eponymous self-titled four-song EP “Pelican” in 2003, Pelican expanded their sound with 2004’s critically acclaimed “Australasia”. In 2005 Pelican released the “March Into the Sea” EP (featuring the original 20 minutes version), followed by, arguably, their most accomplished record to date, “The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw”. “City Of Echoes” was released June 5th, 2007. In 2009 the band signed with Southern Lord Records in preparation for the release of their fourth full album.

Pitchfork Quote: Rock music developed as an art form with vocals, so when people hear guitar, bass, and drums in unison now, they expect to hear vocals, too. That's a reasonable expectation. The human voice is the oldest musical instrument, and the one that resonates most frequently with people. Instrumental rock attempts to supply that resonance with, well, instruments. This is a difficult task, given that no musical instrument is as expressive as the human voice. Pelican have worked with these problems for most of this decade. Early efforts, a self-titled EP and the Australasia full-length, got by on power and a little atmosphere. At that time, the band sounded like a more expansive, drone-oriented Neurosis. Its riffs were dark, and its tones were thick. In that style of rock/metal, vocals are often screamed or growled, adding textural abrasion instead of functioning as a lyrical instrument. Thus, Pelican's lack of vocals wasn't noticeable, since their guitars more than compensated.

[ 2014 'ARKTIKA' ]. After four years of silence, instrumental metal standard bearers Pelican have come thundering back, with Forever Becoming, an eight-song album destined to be considered one of the most punishingly rewarding albums of the year. Before their hiatus, the group had laid a sizeable chunk of the groundwork for the instrumental metal scene that’s come into its own in the 13 years since they started playing together. After 2009 the band found itself slightly adrift, and found the day to day struggle of being full-time underground musicians colliding with new families and non-musical careers. Wisely, they didn’t make any rash decisions, and as suits a band known for making dense, meditative sounds they simply patiently figured out how to move past their obstacles.

THE CLIFF "EP"

Credits Released 24 February 2015 Available Format: Digital MP3 & Vinyl

"The Cliff” is a new “vocal driven” 12” /EP release from Chicago's esteemed instrumental quartet Pelican. The 12” vinyl is fresh re-imaginings of 'The Cliff', a highlight from their most recent album, 2013's Forever Becoming, and one recently completed new song. The four track EP includes remixes from Justin Broadrick (of Godflesh, Jesu), Aaron Harris and Bryant Clifford Meyer of ISIS/Palms, and, for only the second time in their fourteen year career, vocals. Allen Epley (Shiner, The Life and Times) once again returns to the band’s fold to transform, in a complementary manner, the concept and overall outcome of what we have come to know as Pelican. No cheap juxtaposition, Epley’s seasoned voice is as broad and astonishingly capable on “The Cliff” as the members behind the music, a claim those who have listened to Epley’s contribution on “Final Breath” from 2009’s What We All Come To Need will attest to. Elsewhere on the record, Justin Broadrick and AH/BCM turn in fresh takes of the source material, feeling less like remixes than new compositions reworked from the original source. Rounding out the set is the previously unreleased song “The Wait”, a contemplative semi-acoustic simmer that builds to an explosion of cathartic distortion and melody in true Pelican fashion.

Missed the Boat by Erik Kramer

On Saturday, May 20, multi-instrumentalist and lauded bass player Erik Kramer released his debut studio endeavor, an EP entitled ‘Missed the Boat.’ The Brooklyn-based musician has an especially eclectic sound, one that employs the talent of a slew of musicians: saxophone, trombone, viola, trumpet, back-up vocalists - they’re all there. An experimental record through and through, ‘Missed the Boat’ is an indie record quite unlike anything else that’s come across my desk in recent months.

The Great Long Distance by John D. Reedy

The Great Long Distance is an audible recollection of the first 12 months of a long distance relationship, including the highs and lows and moments in between. It is a journal without words, each of the 12 tracks representing each month respectively. Inspired by the format of NIN's "Ghosts I-IV", the album is a sonic tapestry of different moods and themes, with various recurring motifs and the subtle melding of synthesizer and samples; the result something not quite classical, ambient or electronic - rather, an eclectic blend of the three. For fans of Ólafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm and later Ulver
