Shadowcast Sun

From HeathenHarvest.com… Shadowcast Sun, like the band Earth use clarity and dynamic to power their sound instead of distortion. By saying this, I am not saying they are Earth clones, both bands strength of clarity and dynamic are totally different, Shadowcast use a majestic yet unpretentious build up in their tracks. They seem to indirectly evoke a sense of Slint (and more) again without being clones.
The album opens up with Double Flow which starts with spacious untreated guitars flowing out a gentle riff, restrained beats eventually join in along with keyboards or sample adding atmosphere. Distortion comes in, the drums power up, but not to overload. Shadowcast maintain each tracks dynamic well, they add up guitar build up with enough measure for it to be moving without becoming boring. Zenith shows them beginning to communicate between themselves in tracks which takes a certain amount of musicianship beyond just making a nice arrangement.
Void is held well together as an album by using a lot of similar elements within tracks scattered on the album and carefully differs in what is prominent within each build up, there is clearly a sense of group agreement in place when deciding what takes prominence.
I would like to see a sense of improvisation replacing calculation in future as Shadowcast seem easily capable of producing strong material. It would be great to see an albums worth of tracks selected that were the best of a lot of strong material or even one long piece of improvisation.
The only strain of metal that I can link this to is Czech Republic band Thy Catafalque, but even then it is only vague at that. Fast metal beats occasionally rise to the surface, but they along with the guitars seem to stretch much further a field than expected. I would argue this album to be a strong piece of self produced music that seems to have hybridised a lot of genres.
