【sgt.】Formed in 1999 in Tokyo, Japan, the four-piece sgt. utilizes a broad range of genres to create their distinctive sound, including that of post-rock, jazz, ambient and improvisation. Using a guitar, violin, drums and bass guitar, the band creates uplifting instrumental compositions comparable to such acts as "Toe" or "Anoice".

Having played for almost a continuous decade, Sgt. is one of the veteran post-rock bands in Japan. Sgt. can offer what only an experienced band can deliver, a tight sound. The composition of their music is a version of post-rock that is soaked with classical, noise, jazz and emo motifs. This can be attributed to the pr the essence of a female violinist who clutches onto the band's sound and takes it in new directions.

【sgt.】is very active on the live circuit and even run their own semi-regular event called "seimei" which brings together the best in the Japanese indies scene. Bands like 54-71, good music, OVUM, win a sheep free, The World Heritage, and other bands have graced the event with their presence. In 2005, they released their first mini-album, "perception of casualty" with the help of the engineering skills of one of Toe's members. Sgt. then released a split with good music the following year. Their newest release, Stylus Fantasticus was released in 2008 internationally by HearJapan.

One of the often overlooked aspects of the band is their omnipresence in the Japanese music scene. They have done collaborations with ROVO, Boredoms, ONJI, etc. They are also the backing band for ILL, which is a new band from a supercar member. They are also official members of the electro dub band MAS.

While they have vast playing time with some of Japan's greatest underground musicians, Sgt. has built up a repertoire of playing with western bands when they come to Japan. They have opened for the German progressive band, CAN, Damo Suzuki, and the Art of Fighting from Australia. The vast distances they cover in the music scene surely has added deep nuances to their musical productions and is definitely a band to keep an eye on. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After making 2010 the year they mastered the art of live performance with their first venture abroad in their Canada tour, sgt. were able to put their experience to good use. Their first album in 3 years features 9 rich tracks. The sgt. post rock soundscapes accentuated by violins all told in a story of galactic proportions. This is conceptual art at its finest.

The cover illustration was done by Yoko Sueyoshi. This album also features the first time any vocals were placed on a track. The vocals are from none other than kim from uhnellys. There are also an assortment of instruments that make there way into each track.

Japan's premier post-rock outfit for the most part of a decade. You don't just waltz into Tokyo and get titles like that forced upon you unless you've really done something of importance. Namely, how they effortlessly strangle colourful emotions out of their instruments to paint images equally as light as they are dark; equally as Jazz as they are noise-rock; and just as emo as they are classical compositions. It's very potent stuff.

New album Land of Evergone by Ali Murray

Ali Murray is an ethereal folk songwriter/musician from the cold isle of Lewis in the north of Scotland. He writes dark atmospheric folk music with lush sweeping dreamy soundscapes and Celtic-twinged instrumentation. His new album LAND OF EVERGONE strikes a balance that is intimate and soaring, peaceful and haunting, sad and quietly joyful, delicately reverberating with Murray's dreamy voice and guitar playing.

Review for 52 by Orellana

Orellana is a neo-classical/post-rock collective hailing from Bristol, UK. Their new album “52”, released in late December, brought in the new year with it’s explosive and intricate sound. The project’s music transcends genre definitions in order to focus on a broad, diverse concept that is more emotional than tangible. This particular release is full of rich and diverse arrangements, but it is also a powerful exercise in minimalism, one that showcases the strength of very few notes placed in the right spots. The simplicity of the arrangement is actually one of the strongest aspects of this entire release: there’s a palpable stillness created by the long, drone notes in the background, which almost makes you feel like the world is happening in slow motion. When the chords and notes change, it feels quite monumental due to the beautiful contrast between the stillness of the background textures and the expressive sound of the guitar-based melodies.
