You.May.Die.In.The.Desert is a three-piece instrumental band from Seattle, WA. [ YMDITD ] have released two albums, Bears in the Yukon, and Harmonic Motion: Volume I [ a split record with Gifts From Enola ]. Bears in the Yukon was originally released in Japan by Zankyo Records and more recently in the USA by The Mylene Sheath. The band has toured extensively in the western USA and had the opportunity to tour Japan in June 2007. In 2010, they self-released an EP, titled “International Waters E.P.”. Their first official full length LP, International Waters was released in August of 2012. They will be touring the west coast in support of the new album along with many smaller regional tours.

You.May.Die.In.The.Desert…[w]ith only three members… is able to approach Oceansize’s Effloresce-era ambiance with At the Drive-In’s sense of urgency without sounding forced… The draw is this: Their route is extremely creative, and they hinge their progressions on such delicate interplay (rhythmic, tonal) that it’s impressive to watch/listen to; they’re also extremely good at tugging at your mood. __[ Seattle Weekly ].

You.May.Die.In.The.Desert are a notable Seattle Trio who play exciting instrumental tracks inspired by celebrated artists like Pinback, Juno, Explosions in the Sky, and old local favorites Sharks Keep Moving. Their songs boast beauty but with muscle–compositions leap forward and spin around, and there are moments where they get messy and distorted enough to make you feel a little dizzy… __[ Megan Seling (The Stranger) ].

You.May.Die.In.The.Desert came up in the hardcore math-rock scene. Putting those influences into a melodic post-rock band makes for very interesting listen. As one might imagine, their songs can span from as short as three minutes to upwards of ten. There is always a dramatic story for the listener to develop in their instrumental verses, but the aesthetic You.May.Die most embodies is triumph. __[ Nikki Benson (SSG Music) ].

You.May.Die.In.The.Desert are only a three-piece, such is the chaotic nature of their music. Focusing on the use of elaborate fretwork and delay effects rather than adopting a typical ‘quiet-loud’ approach…You.May.Die.In.The.Desert successfully blur the boundaries between post-rock and jazz, although stylistically their sound is far removed from either of their better-known counterparts… __[ Richard White (The Silent Ballet) ].

You.May.Die.In.The.Desert is a three-piece band that makes instrumental post rock along the lines of Explosions in the Sky. They manage to keep this disc from feeling repetitive or particularly formulaic, their tracks traversing joyfully unstable landscapes of time changes and careful shredding. Interlude is used to slow down the album, giving the listener a breather, and a Jatun closes out the album in a dream-like ambient wash. __[ Redefine Magazine ].

The music is temporally challenging, as the delay effects overlap every note with the last, creating a frenzied, surreal stupor which hangs over the music. YMDITD’s auditory approach is a nice addition to the US instrumental scene, which is largely pigeonholed into “bands that are loud” and “bands that are not loud.” Bears in the Yukon sacrifices a few opportune moments to explode into a caccoon of noise and distortion for the opportunity to raise the level of sophistication by use of clever transitioning techniques. __[ Jordan Volz (The Silent Ballet) ].

Review for the new EP "I Wanna Be Exploited" by Tommy Red

A combination of retro aesthetics, enduring lyrics and alt-rock grit. The best music happens when artists refuse to remain stuck in their own comfort zones and creative boxes. Whenever this happens, they are free to give full range to their vision, and they can really come up with something that’s groundbreaking and personable. This is certainly the case here with Tommy Red and his brand new EP release, “I Wanna Be Exploited.”

Dream within a Dream by Marva Von Theo
