Xiu Xiu Profile

San Jose, United States (2000 – present)Xiu Xiu [ pronounced as “shew shew” ] is an experimental band originally from San Jose, California and currently based in Durham, NC and Brooklyn The band is named after the main character of the 1998 Chinese film Tian yu [ a.k.a. Xiu Xiu: The Sent-Down Girl ]. Xiu Xiu was first formed in 2000 and is the main project of singer-songwriter Jamie Stewart, who records with friends on his home computer. Past members include Cory McCulloch, Lauren Andrews and Yvonne Chen. Stewart’s cousin, Caralee McElroy joined the band in 2003 and was the only other permanent member of the band until her departure in early 2009. Some, including McCulloch, have played in previous bands with Stewart such as Ten in the Swear Jar and IBOPA.

In 2006 drummer/percussionist Ches Smith joined Stewart and McElroy in touring to support their 2006 album “The Air Force”. In May 2007 Devin Hoff joined the band on bass. Xiu Xiu’s latest full-length, Women as Lovers, was released January 29 via Kill Rock Stars. On May 15, 2009 Caralee McElroy left the band, for personal reasons. She’s now involved with the band Cold Cave.

[ Life and Live ] ~ Xiu Xiu is one of those rare bands that seemingly makes albums without any regards to what people expect and/or want from them. Fabulous Muscles is about the closest to date that they've gotten to a pop record, and this years La Forêt seemed to find Jamie Stewart recoiling from the large amount of positive press that the previous album got by delving into even more extreme quiet and noise.

Life And Live isn't exactly a new album from Xiu Xiu, instead it's a collection of live recordings (mostly stripped-down) made by Devendra Banhart when the two were on tour together. The result is something that is musically completely different than the studio recordings from the group, but still has all the confrontational, emotional, and raw edges that you would expect. In some ways, the release feels like a continuation of the limited Fag Patrol release that came out, but in addition to acoustic tracks, Life And Live also contains some rather spirited performances from Stewart (and bandmates)

The long release actually contains multiple versions of a couple tracks, including the opener "20,000 Deaths For Eidelyn Gonzales, 20,000 Deaths For Jamie Peterson." Like "I Broke Up" (the other track that is featured in two different versions on the release), the two different versions provide unique glimpses into the emotional state of Stewart at the time of the performance, as both tracks range a great deal in terms of vocal inflections and how much force he puts into playing his instrument.

There are only a couple tracks on the release that feature instrumentation more than a single piece and vocals, including the clanging "Jennifer Lopez," and the electric guitar and accordion of "Dr. Troll." Both of the tracks stand up just fine (even though neither of them are recorded with any high fidelity), but ultimately it all comes down to Stewart and his personal performances on the release. In that respect, it's a great document of the variety that one gets when listening to the group, from the sad, introspective "Brooklyn Dodgers" to the intense, seething "Sad Pony Guerrilla Girl" (on which Stewart does some almost possessed-sounding vocals). In that respect, the album succeeds greatly, even though it takes way more than one listen for it to sink in properly. Uncompromising and raw at times, Life And Live is just what you'd expect from Xiu Xiu.

Lyrical Themes:

Angel Guts is Xiu Xiu's follow-up studio album to its 2012 Always.[1] The title of the new album is based on the 1979 Japanese erotic film Angel Guts: Red Classroom.[1] Its themes include "racialized sex, double suicides, double penetration, criminality, [and] fear of physical harm".[1] Tiny Mix Tapes described the album preview as "the most Xiu Xiu album ever released", darker than its preceding albums, and "the sound of Xiu Xiu's death".[2] Record label Bella Union compared the album's tone to that of Suicide, Einstürzende Neubauten, and Scott Walker.[3]

Recording:

The album was recorded at Nurse, the home studio of Jamie Stewart, and the Elmwood studio of producer John Congleton in Dallas, Texas.[3] The instruments on the album are limited to analog drum machines, analog synthesizers, and a drum set. Stewart's songwriting was influenced by his move from North Carolina to a crime-ridden area of Los Angeles, as well as the aforementioned erotic film.[2] Stewart's home was near "a park divided among four gangs, a lake routinely dragged for bodies, [and] a building wherein two infant skeletons were recently uncovered". The album's first single, "Stupid in the Dark", was released via Pitchfork[3] on SoundCloud on November 20, 2013.[2] The album will be released on February 4, 2014[1] in the US via Polyvinyl Records and in the UK via Bella Union[1] on CD, clear vinyl, limited-edition red vinyl, and as a digital download.

Review for OVUM by Chronotope Project

Crafting a concept album is an incredibly difficult task. Tying together a cohesive narrative across a record’s worth of songs isn’t just daunting, it’s an endeavour that even some of the industry’s finest have failed to do memorably. This task, however, becomes notably more difficult when you’re dealing in the abstract via instrumental soundscapes. That is what Chronotope Project, the moniker of composer Jeffrey Ericson Allen, attempts to do with his latest project, ‘Ovum.’

Review of A703 by Naal

NAAL is an eclectic music project led by Chicago composer Dave Mantel. This talented musician has a true passion for great melodies and haunting musical textures. His blend of ambient, shoegaze and experimental drone music feels personal and unique, echoing the work of artists such as Slowdive, Boards of Canada or Sigur Ros, just to mention a few.
