* * * * * [The] Slowest Runner [In All The World] * * * * *

FROM " bandinbostonpodcast " ~ I suppose you’d call Brooklyn’s [The] Slowest Runner [In All The World] a progressive rock / experimental / classical…. uhh… Well forget that, I’d call them the perfect soundtrack to an epic film.

Consisting of guitar, bass, drums, piano, violin, cello, tape loops, vocals that are barely recognizable as human, and samples, they craft sweeping textures that will give you goosebumps. I found myself expecting to hear the wave of applause that normally follows a performance at the symphony. And the sounds of creaking floorboards should give you an idea of how delicately they approached their session!

EDIT NOTE: 2011 [ The Flophouse Sessions ] added. After the epic grandeur of [T]SR[IATW]‘s first session, we had high hopes for a return visit. And they did not disappoint. Even the weather set the tone for the slightly darker musical textures this time around: we recorded this during one of the heaviest rainfalls of the summer. The rain you hear at the beginning is no sound effect- I recorded that while the band was tuning up.

Review for OVUM by Chronotope Project

Crafting a concept album is an incredibly difficult task. Tying together a cohesive narrative across a record’s worth of songs isn’t just daunting, it’s an endeavour that even some of the industry’s finest have failed to do memorably. This task, however, becomes notably more difficult when you’re dealing in the abstract via instrumental soundscapes. That is what Chronotope Project, the moniker of composer Jeffrey Ericson Allen, attempts to do with his latest project, ‘Ovum.’

Review of A703 by Naal

NAAL is an eclectic music project led by Chicago composer Dave Mantel. This talented musician has a true passion for great melodies and haunting musical textures. His blend of ambient, shoegaze and experimental drone music feels personal and unique, echoing the work of artists such as Slowdive, Boards of Canada or Sigur Ros, just to mention a few.
