At times described as an angry Failure on downers or similar to Swans on speed, Gholas sound is very rhythm based with subtle hints of melody amidst the harsh noises and high volumes that they utilize. Gholas aim is to assault the audience with what is initially abrasive sounding music while at the same time offering those that can take that initial onslaught multi layered and textured pieces of music.

Their songs are harsh down tuned blasts of sound that scratch the surface of unhealthy obsessions with the writings of Philip K. Dick, Frank Herbert, and other works of literature and cinema. The New Jersey based quartet released their first EP [ Here I Am, Here Is Infinity ] in 2008 and in November 2010 they released their first full length, [ Загадка ] which was recorded by Joe Smiley at Red Planet Sound and was mastered by James Plotkin [ Khanate, OLD ]. Art for the release was provided by Drew Speziale [ Circle Takes The Square ].

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [ Web Source... ] This New Jersey-based quartet has carved out its own niche within the city's heavy music scene, blowing eardrums and dropping jaws with their spaced-out progressive metal compositions. Equal parts [ Mogwai ] ~ [ Mouth of the Architect ] ~ [ Russian Circles ] ~ [ Jesu ] and [ Sonic Youth ]. Gholas are a rare and compelling sort of band, one with its own aesthetic, sound, and raw, beating heart. ABBRASIVE... hell yeah but also an exquisite listen that definitely goes for fans of [ Russian Circle ] and [ Mouth Of The Architect ] fans. By all means GET ALL.

Review for "I Want to Stand Where the Sun Himself Shakes with Fear" by Voices from Deep Below

Even though the independent rock scene is quite inundated with new acts, there’s always a welcome place for an outfit that changes the formula enough to be consistently interesting and worth taking notice of. The New York-based alternative rock group Voices from Deep Below attempts to do just that, fusing together a variety of styles into a surprisingly coherent sound. Their new record, “I Want to Stand Where the Sun Himself Shakes with Fear”, is a five song album that navigates alt-rock, experimental, and borderline metal and progressive influences all at the same time.
