Grouper is the solo project for ambient musician Liz Harris, of Portland, Oregon. Harris’ music is a mixture of softly-strummed guitar, Wurlitzer keys, and her delicate, dreamy vocals, all of which are heavily drenched in reverb. Harris’ first album was 2005’s Grouper, a self-released full-length CD-R, followed later that year by Way Their Crept on Free Porcupine (re-released in 2007 on Type Records). Other recordings include 2006’s He Knows, released as a 3” CD, the 12” Weird Forest release Wide in 2007, and a 7” called Tried.

She released a collaboration album with Xiu Xiu in 2006, entitled Creepshow, as well as contributing a remix of “Tonite & Today” to 2007’s Remixed & Covered compilation. Harris released her third full-length album, Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill, in 2008. It featured at number 37 of Pitchfork’s 50 Best Albums of 2008 - a previous review on the site praised the album as “druggy and sexy and arty and pretty”. A review on Drowned in Sound called it “deeply meditative, almost spiritual… one of the most delicate, affecting albums of the year”.

In March 2009 it was announced that Grouper would join the lineup for The Fans Strike Back!, an All Tomorrow’s Parties festival in Minehead, Somerset held from 8 to 10 May 2009. In the spring of 2009, Grouper was the supporting act for the high profile Animal Collective tour in support of the latter’s 2009 release, “Merriweather Post Pavilion.” NBC Washington’s “Concert Picks” column said of Grouper, “The ambient one-woman post-rock band Grouper also makes this show a must-see (if you have tickets or connections or luck – otherwise, sorry, it’s sold out, sold out a long time ago).

Liz Harris phones it in from Portland, OR. One of a coterie of female musicians breaking into the boys' club of noise and electronic music, and building massive cathedrals on dirty vacant lots. Crumbling drones and ghostly vocals emanating from the murk, made all the more beautiful and emotive by the phone's natural compression. Awesome, in all the word's senses. Collabos and splits with Xiu Xiu, City Center, Pumice, Inca Ore, and Roy Montgomery.

[ "Song Streamed Into Radio via Phone" ] ~ The recording moves steadily from feedback-laden irritants through soft elementary minimalism to its true sweet spot, a rough-hewn, moody shoegazer pop, thick with distorted chamber arrangements and haunting vocals. The word BRILLIANT doesn't even begin to describe how awesome this lo-fi recording is.

Small Quote from Sputnikmusic: " Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill"

More than just a pretty acoustic record, Harris, through Grouper, has created a startlingly vivid and brooding shoegaze gem that works in spite of its length and first impressions. If my reaction to it is also overwhelmingly personal, then it’s only a testament to how strong I find the material to be. Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill is not an album I’d recommend to just anyone; an audience will eventually find Grouper, and when they do, it’ll be more than well-deserved.

When I was a teenager the wreckage of a sailboat washed up on the shore of Agate Beach. The remains of the vessel weren't removed for several days. I walked down with my father to peer inside the boat cabin. Maps, coffee cups and clothing were strewn around inside. I remember looking only briefly, wilted by the feeling that I was violating some remnant of this man's presence by witnessing the evidence of its failure. Later I read a story about him in the paper.

It was impossible to know what had happened. The boat had never crashed or capsized. He had simply slipped off somehow, and the boat, like a riderless horse, eventually came back home. [ The Man Who Died in His Boat ] is an album of unreleased songs recorded alongside the Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill album.

Review for OVUM by Chronotope Project

Crafting a concept album is an incredibly difficult task. Tying together a cohesive narrative across a record’s worth of songs isn’t just daunting, it’s an endeavour that even some of the industry’s finest have failed to do memorably. This task, however, becomes notably more difficult when you’re dealing in the abstract via instrumental soundscapes. That is what Chronotope Project, the moniker of composer Jeffrey Ericson Allen, attempts to do with his latest project, ‘Ovum.’

Review of A703 by Naal

NAAL is an eclectic music project led by Chicago composer Dave Mantel. This talented musician has a true passion for great melodies and haunting musical textures. His blend of ambient, shoegaze and experimental drone music feels personal and unique, echoing the work of artists such as Slowdive, Boards of Canada or Sigur Ros, just to mention a few.
