Little is known about the secretive duo named AETHYR, aside from the fact that Mr.D and Mr.W are aliasing names of well-known professional artists who live and work somewhere in between Russia and Western Europe. One of them is a gifted musician who plays in various music bands, and the other is an acclaimed graphic and visual designer.

Their self-described “heavy-drone ritual” musical voyage was presented to the world via the group’s 2009 “Mass” EP available on “Dirgenera Quadrivium MMIX” split-release on Russian record label R.A.I.G. or "Russian Association of Independent Genres". AETHYR’s basic approach – heavy-droning distorted guitars, rasping vintage synthesizers, programmed metallic percussions, noisy feedback, and other sound effects – was laid down on their consequent recordings and revealed an ambition to create a punishing of black and doom metal, dark ambient and harsh industrial elements.

The second time when AETHYR was rised again with a punishing slab of blackened industrial doom on R.A.I.G. Messio (2010) is an first album but it continues the cryptic and menacing atmosphere of the debut Mass EP utilizing the leaden riffage of sub-tuned bass guitar, layers of harsh textured distortion and electronic ambience, hair-raising discordant guitar soloing and synth stabs, indecipherable ennui-laden voices and steady slow-motion martial percussions.

The duo’s apocalyptic epiphanies of future times are dark and cold borrowing equally from erratic aesthetic of industrial music and the most extreme forms of black and doom metal. Presented in a black cardboard folder with silver metallic printing and inlay. In februry of 2011 Aethyr released Cassette and MP3 EP features two ritualistic dark-scapes - "Ave A" and "Dominus" - over twenty minutes of new music recorded by Mr.D and Mr.W. As well in the end of same year to celebrate the Winter Solstice [ or Yule, or Mithra Day, or Shri Ekadashi, or Hanukkah, or St. Thomas' Day... or whatever you celebrate ] AETHYR come up with a new MP3- only EP entitled "Nihil Grail". It consists of two previously unpublished tracks - "Nihil Grail" and "Temple of Set". Recorded live by Mr.D and Mr.W. with Mr.S contributing live drums on the title track. This EP was a window to a brand new full-length album, which will be relesed in a first part of 2012.

Review of "Burial Songs" by Palehorse/Palerider

In order to excel in the independent music industry, an act has to define itself as especially unique with a sound quite unlike anything else in the community. This is a tall order, one that isn’t easily filled by acts entering variations of rock music due to the immense amount of bands flooding the scene right now. Palehorse/Palerider, a “doomgaze” trio from Denver, has released an EP entitled ‘Burial Songs’ that does a surprisingly superb job at separating itself from the pack. Let’s delve into it.

Review for "I Want to Stand Where the Sun Himself Shakes with Fear" by Voices from Deep Below

Even though the independent rock scene is quite inundated with new acts, there’s always a welcome place for an outfit that changes the formula enough to be consistently interesting and worth taking notice of. The New York-based alternative rock group Voices from Deep Below attempts to do just that, fusing together a variety of styles into a surprisingly coherent sound. Their new record, “I Want to Stand Where the Sun Himself Shakes with Fear”, is a five song album that navigates alt-rock, experimental, and borderline metal and progressive influences all at the same time.
