Iceland (1997 to present) Múm (pronounced as [muːm], “moom”)** is an experimental Icelandic pop group whose music is characterized by soft vocals, eccentric beats and colorful effects, and a variety of traditional and unconventional instruments. Originally a duo, the band has expanded and contracted like a beating heart in the 12 years of being and has counted 15 – 20 people along the way.
The band was formed in 1997 by original members Gunnar Örn Tynes and Örvar Þóreyjarson Smárason, their first release was a split 10” with the girl-band Spúnk and saw light in the summer of ‘98. They were joined a year later by twin sisters Gyða and Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir and released two albums as quartet.
Following a number of collaborative projects, the group’s celebrated debut album ‘Yesterday Was Dramatic, Today Is OK’ (reissued by Morr Music in October 2005) gained a wealth of glowing press and widespread praise. A remix project, ‘Please Smile My Noise Bleed’, also released on the Morr Music label in November 2001.
In 2002, after the release of Finally we are no one and the extensive first world tour, Gyða left the band to return to her studies in Reykjavík. Shortly after, the third sister Ásthildur Valtýsdóttir joined for singing duties temporarily and Serena Tideman replaced Gyda on cello, for a single European tour. The band’s third album, ‘Summer Make Good’, a darker and foggier, nautically themed work was released in May 2004, flanked by two singles, ‘Nightly Cares’ and ‘Dusk Log’.

[ Early Birds ] Icelandic experimental indie poppers múm’s catalog began in 2000 with the beautiful, electronic-tinged soundscapes of Yesterday Was Dramatic-Today Is OK; now, 12 years and five albums later, their work has evolved into a delightfully scattered, bleary, twitchy electro-folk wonderland. Múm’s new release, Early Birds, looks back to the first few years of the band’s existence, collecting tracks recorded prior to that debut album. While the result is a scattershot pack of largely instrumental, often meandering sketches, it’s still a strong reminder of the strength of founding members Gunnar Örn Tynes and Örvar Þóreyjarson Smárason’s vision and inventiveness.
By the time Yesterday Was Dramatic hit record store shelves, the addition of twin sisters Gyða and Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir (known in some circles as Kria Brekkan), among many other talented musicians, fleshed out the group’s sound by adding layers of haunted coos to the mix. Early Birds, then, has been even further pared down than the earlier albums, a surprise especially to those primarily familiar with the newer material. While múm’s take on pop is always great fun, the slippery beauty of their first two albums is their best work, and something close to that bone is more than welcome.
The disc is split into halves, the first incorporating much of the glitchy charm of their best work, and the second veering towards quieter, sparser, more introspective territory. While there are some haunting, glacial worlds in the latter half, Early Birds is clearly front-loaded. The twinkling, shifting “Bak þitt er sem rennibraut” opens things on a familiar note, the rapid twists of sampled drums pushing the ADD of the blinking light synths into overdrive.
Later, “Hvernig á að særa vini sína” slows that feeling down, and gets an added layer of extremely lo-fi male-female vocals, as if sung into a telephone. Despite the language barrier for this listener, the song (like much of múm’s material) enchants in its ability to convey a world in its charming musicality. The best song on the collection, the sadly brief “Náttúrúbúrú” finds a horn-tinted hook, delves into the glitchy electronic pool, and never looks back, bringing the listener along on the journey to this technicolor world.
[ NOTE ] – This is purely an informative update / page there no download is or will be provided on this one. That said if you as desperate as I am I bet [ Google.COM ] does not share the same statement. Search for it and you will find it. It’s a brilliant release and I’ve seen it tons of places.
