Biography

Katerwaul began in early January 2007, and comprise Tim Courtney, Graham Chamers, and Nick J. Morrice. Their music comes from different places individually but they all share a love and passion for the atmosphere and mood of various bands loosely described as ‘post-rock’ – from, Godspeed you! Black Emperor, Mogwai, Oceansize, Cave-In, Sigur Ros and A Silver Mt Zion to name but 6… Outside of musical influences, cinema, literature and the media all filter though as themes and starting points for discussion and song writing. Lyrical themes can range from intense personal moments to the World at large as portrayed in some of the film work and books we love.

Live as well as on record, Katerwaul always strive for putting the most they can into their music and their conviction and sincerity is not lost on those who go to see them play or listen to their recordings. Katerwaul love playing live and like many bands before them, feel its the best place to meet their music head on. Katerwaul are to release their third album “The Dirt & The Trees” on October 22nd

Reviews

“The revelation of the night was certainly Katerwaul, if we’re honest we came to them with some suspicion as they described themselves on their website as “post-rock progressive ambience” which really is not our kind of thing! But they were an absolutely captivating band who, despite a unique performance style including unheard vocals and hand signals, played with real emotion. They have the thing that sets apart fantastic live bands from passable live bands: being able to really connect with their audience. The only disappointing thing we have to say about them is that their set was quite short and we could easily have swayed to their atmospheric sound a little while longer! They are most certainly an up and coming band you should definitely look out for in the future.”

(OXJAM TAKEOVER, ABERDEEN 2011)

“Singer Tim has an undeniably powerful vocal style and sings like he means it… The overall effect is epic post-rock in the vein of [ Sigur Ros ] while the effects driven guitars recall early 90’s shoegazing bands such as Slowdive or Ride. There are shades of Mogwai in there as well… they do their variant on the formula very well and I think they have improved with each time I have seen them, they are slick and the great sound in the venue this evening does them a great service.”

- Flares & Seagulls

(THE TUNNELS, ABERDEEN Supporting The Unwinding Hours)

“Live, Katerwaul are impassioned unpredictable and at times absorbing. They understand arrangements instinctively and swings from periods of loose and delicately interwoven delayed guitar arpeggios and gentle falsetto, to moments of crashing, distorted bass-and-drum driven chaos. And back again. At times frenzied, at others fragile; Katerwaul know when they should and – crucially – should not live up to their name.”
