* * * * * Kronos Quartet * * * * *

Kronos Quartet is a string quartet founded by violinist David Harrington in 1973. Since 1978, the quartet has been based in San Francisco, California. The longest-running combination of performers (1978–1999) had Harrington and John Sherba on violin, Hank Dutt on viola and Joan Jeanrenaud on cello. Jennifer Culp replaced Jeanrenaud on cello in 1999. Jeffrey Zeigler replaced Culp on cello in 2005.

Recently, the Kronos Quartet began a commission process for composers under the age of 30, in the hope of bringing some of the talented young composers of our day to light. Kronos specializes in new music and has a long history of commissioning new works. In fact, over 600 works have been created for the Kronos Quartet. They have worked with many minimalist composers including Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Terry Riley and Kevin Volans.

Kronos has collaborated with composers from diverse countries such as Franghiz Ali Zadeh from Azerbaijan and Osvaldo Golijov from Argentina. Golijov is a MacArthur Fellow who has done compositions and arrangements for Kronos CDs such as Caravan and Nuevo. Kronos covers a very broad range of musical genres: Mexican folk, experimental, pre-classical early music, movie soundtracks [ Requiem for a Dream ] jazz and tango.

Kronos has even recorded adaptations of Purple Haze, Flugufrelsarinn, Marquee Moon, and Dinner Music for a Pack of Hungry Cannibals. Composers aside, Kronos has teamed up with artists from around the world, including the legendary Bollywood “playback singer” Asha Bhosle; the American soprano Dawn Upshaw; Mexican pop-rockers Cafe Tacuba; and the Romanian gypsy band Taraf de Haidouks.

Kronos has performed live with the likes of the late poet Allen Ginsberg, Modern Jazz Quartet, David Bowie, and Bjork, and has appeared on recordings with such diverse talents as singer-songwriters Dave Matthews, Nelly Furtado, Rokia Traore, Joan Armatrading, and Texas yodeler Don Walser.

2011 – Vladimir Martynov
2000 – Caravan
2000 – Nuevo
1993 – Morton Feldman
1985 – Monk Suite: Kronos Quartet Plays Music Of Thelonious Monk

[ REVIEWS ].

[ Morton Feldman ] Written two years before his death in 1987, Morton Feldman’s Piano and String Quartet is a shimmering, pristine musical event. Contrasting Aki Takahashi’s widely-spaced piano arpeggios with Kronos Quartet’s extended chords, Feldman allows lingering sounds from either the piano or the strings to haze over many of the piece’s near-silences. Kronos plays their parts with tremulous fragility, often making pointedly clear the viola’s musical valley between the leading violins and the trailing cello. By the time Feldman composed this piece, he was deeply committed to extended works–chamber pieces that could telescope motifs and worry their tonality so that it warbled between hauntingly atonal and familiarly tonal singing. This is a powerful, evening piece, one that can set an extravagantly crystalline musical mood. __[ Andrew Bartlett ].

[ Monk Suite: Kronos Quartet Plays Music Of Thelonious Monk ] Kronos Quartet rearranges and reinvents the music of Thelonious Monk in a stunning fashion. If you’ve heard their disc of Bill Evans interpretations, you’ll know what I mean. The Playing is top notch, and the swing is there. This record also feature special guest Ron Carter, released Oct 18, 2005 on the Savoy label

[ Nuevo ] With ‘Nuevo’ – a project based entirely around Mexican composers, musical traditions and influences – the Kronos Quartet have delivered one of the most striking group odysseys to date. Produced by Gustavo Santaolalla, both an authority on Latin American art music as well as the most in-demand producers of rock en espanol, the album also features a host of guest artists from both the concert hall as well as the streets of Mexico. Housed in a slipcase. 2002.

To say that the Kronos Quartet’s Nuevo is their most adventurous outing to date is hardly an understatement. This diverse collection of Mexican compositions and traditional tunes brims with an unpredictable energy and a dazzling array of Latin American guest performers, and, yes, Kronos keeps up throughout. A cocktail pop tune from Esquivel gets covered, there’s a chamber arrangement of Revueltas’s sprawling orchestral work Sensemaya, and Nortec Collective member Plankton Man remixes Kronos’s interpretation of “El Sinaloense” into a sizzling dance music track, which closes the disc. The playing is spirited, to say the least (just check out “El Llorar,” with guest vocalists Alejandro Flores and Efren Vargas). But this is foremost a party record.

A bevy of reverb effects and instrumentation (including a squeaky musical leaf solo on “Perfidia”) ensures that things stay unpredictable. Production work by Rock en Espanol producer Gustavo Santaolalla infuses this disc with an edgy modernism. The bulk of these compositions have been arranged by composer Osvaldo Golijov, who seemingly brings a manic energy and a playfulness to everything he touches. Chamber music purists may scoff, but the rest of us will be busy dancing and thrilling to this exciting, genre-blurring Kronos project. __[ Jason Verlinde ].

[ Caravan ] The Kronos Quartet–apparently tired of performing some of the most riveting Western classical works composed in the last century–decided to take a vacation with Caravan. Where did they go? As evidenced by this globetrotting disc, seemingly everywhere. Music from the Middle East, South America, India, Portugal, and California (to name just a few) find their way onto this genre-blurring disc, along with a few surprises. They do a dizzying take on Dick Dale’s “Miserlou,” which we learn was originally written by Nicholas Roubanis in the ’30s; perform a tune from India’s bustling “Bollywood” film music industry; and tackle Terry Riley’s inventive “Corgeo Funebre en el Monte Diablo”–the second movement of his Requiem for Adam (written for the late son of Kronos leader David Harrington). These are disparate but enthralling works that run the gamut from frenetic to reflective. Even though Caravan sounds less cohesive than Kronos’s other world music foray, Pieces of Africa, this is still an enthralling collection and a must for Kronos fans. __[ Jason Verlinde ].
