A Signal In The Static - A Future Remembered
“A Future Remembered” is a new thought-provoking release by A Signal In The Static.
The project is the brainchild of Steven K. Smith, a talented and dedicated composer formerly known as the founding member of Mabou, a well-received dark ambient act. On this new musical adventure, Steven set out to create a tantalizing atmosphere with a stunning textural vibe.
A Future Remembered strikes with blankets of noise cutting through the air. Melodies swiftly overtake the layers of fuzzy, white noise and become more intelligible, paving the way for some beautiful guitar lines. The rhythm section is uncomplicated and refreshingly minimalistic, offering a backbone to the melodies, without ever overpowering the sonic aesthetics of this particular release.
The album is built on a lush and haunting layers of drones and textures, alternating atonal dissonances with compelling melodies. The sound makes me think of the work of artists as diverse as This Will Destroy You, Mogwai or Godspeed You! Black Emperor or Maserati, just to mention a few.
The record’s production is also worth being mentioned. The sound is understated and direct with a very organic quality to it. The album’s playlist extends throughout 10 tracks that stretch the album’s sound towards different directions - from the depth of post-rock to the cinematic atmospheres of ambient music and the experimental edge of electronica.
“Enemies from Orion” is perhaps one of my favorite songs on this release. The track begins with a brooding atmosphere, as the drones of noise and grime get consistently louder, leading up to an edgy drum and bass groove, making its way through the static.
“A Future Remembered” lives somewhere in that space where noise becomes melodies and melodies turn to noise, going for a stunning sequence of forward-thinking musical metamorphosis and transformational ideas that transcend the usual canons of post-rock, aiming for a more personal and experimental sound.
The songs on this album flow seamlessly like an engaging playlist, but they also stand out on their own, as every single track showcases a remarkable identity.

The CINE 400 is a three-piece alternative pop band from Athlone in Cape Town, South Africa. The group consists of Ozzy (vocals, songwriting, production), Kazz (songwriting, production) and Aqeeb (songwriting, engineering, production). Originally formed in 2014 by childhood friends Kazz and Ozzy, the band recruited Aqeeb during the members' tenure at the University of Cape Town.
Borrowing its name from an old cinema in Athlone (a previously disadvantaged area located in the Cape Flats), the band believes that - much like the cinema united communities during Apartheid - music serves the same function in contemporary society by bringing people together across racial and cultural barriers.
The band has been influenced by artists such as Arctic Monkeys, Michael Jackson and Nile Rodgers in order to achieve their unique sound. Sonically, the band strives to balance pop melodic sensibilities with nuanced left-field production.
Their six-song debut EP "Now Showing" was self-produced and self-recorded and is scheduled for release towards the end of 2017.
"Plasticine Blues" is a song which juxtaposes driving drum machines, synthesizers and surf rock guitars with a sweet and melancholic sun-drenched melody. It portrays the confusion of a toxic relationship and the futile attempt to rescue it. The highs and lows of the song mimic the emotional rollercoaster that a poor pairing can often take you on.
“Before This There Was Everything”, is Big City Cough's first single from his debut album "Born At Night". "This was the first song written and tracked for the record, and it really set the meditative tone for the whole album. It doesn’t really have a traditional structure - it just keeps going down different paths. Themes are repeated at length to grab you away from distractions and take you on an introspective journey. Once I finished writing “Before This There Was Everything” I knew I had a vibe I could explore for an entire record. The album’s title came from the fact that I’m a night owl. I tend to burn the midnight oil all the time, and the creation of the material kept with that pattern. As it happens I was born at night time, and so was all the music on this record."
"'Waiting to Begin' is a song inspired by the constant struggle of becoming too busy or driven to live or enjoy life; whether you're an artist or working the nine-to-five, you've got to put things on pause once in awhile and appreciate why we're in this mess and how we can make the most of it," Patrick explains. "That's the feeling I wanted to convey, from my own perspective as an artist to everybody out there feeling the same fatigue chasing down lofty goals or obligations when we should really be living in the moment and doing what we love, day after day."

A combination of retro aesthetics, enduring lyrics and alt-rock grit.
The best music happens when artists refuse to remain stuck in their own comfort zones and creative boxes. Whenever this happens, they are free to give full range to their vision, and they can really come up with something that’s groundbreaking and personable. This is certainly the case here with Tommy Red and his brand new EP release, “I Wanna Be Exploited.”
