Rumour Cubes are a group of 20-something Londoners with a love for all things musical. Taking influences from Explosions In The Sky, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Mogwai, among others, the group layer intricate melodies over technical drum beats and delayed guitars. Working with film makers, poets and DJs and using a joystick to control granulated found sounds, Rumour cubes focus as much on the experience as the music itself. An evening in their company will certainly be different.

Rumour Cubes is made up of Joe Bartlett (bass), Siew Cottis (viola), Hannah Morgan (violin), Omar Rahwangi (drums), Adam Stark (guitar, electronics) and Simon Stark (guitar, electronics). Formed in late 2009, the band have just finished recording their debut EP which will be released on Marriage Of A Dead Dog SING! Records

Now this is nothing for the Greatest Hits Collection. No excellent piece of craftsmanship, no mentionable artistic value. Just stuff that happened, songs that happened while I was planning on something else, like a comma in the short story that is my life.

That’s how it rolls, you’re designing your career, planning out your steps, willing to create something big and meaningful, and in the meantime there are all those little things going on… friends become strangers, strangers turn into friends, maybe one of them reminds you that life’s not so bad or meanwhile you’ve found comfort in nihilism, and then there’s this little ukulele that you’ve owned for years but rarely ever played… yet suddenly it’s overflowing with music.

No experiments this time. No exploration of unknown terrain. No concepts, nothing big. Sometimes I feel so sick of sounding lovely all the time, of always sounding the same, but then again I can’t help it. So, fuck creativity! Fuck belief in progress! Maybe I should be elsewhere already.

We always feel urged to move forward, do better shit than yesterday, more accomplished, more brilliant, more fancy, and maybe it’s almost considered stagnation in personal development if someone just wants to lean back and play some boring ukulele folk songs to comfort himself. Sure I want to be more brilliant and fancy and better than ever, too, but for now maybe there is no need to reinvent the wheel as long as I’m happy playing my rediscovered ukulele for a while.

All the flamboyant shit can wait until tomorrow. So once more I’m not taking a creative leap forward but rather just sitting down on the very spot I happen to stand right now. But maybe someone wants to sit besides me and listen?

Sometimes I read funny speculations about what instruments I used on my recordings. This was my repertoire for these songs:
A soprano ukulele, a bowed guitar, a bluegrass banjo, a mandolin banjo, glockenspiel, one concertina, another concertina, a wooden flute, borrowed drums and a cardboard box, casio mini-keyboard, shaker & tambourine.

~~~~~~~~ ( In terms of vocals and not musically or instrumentally but just vocals… this is probably the closest to [ Cranberries ] you’ ll ever hear. STUNNING VOCALS to fall in love. [ MySpace ] | [ Last.Fm ] ). ~~~~~~~
Many centuries before there was a New Zealand, there existed Aotearoa, the ‘Long White Cloud’ homeland of Maori culture and civilisation. The first Europeans arrived with the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman in 1642. The Maori, however, prevented Tasman from landing on the soil of Aotearoa, and it wasn’t until Captain James Cook’s voyages in the following century that the country finally capitulated to European interests. In 1840 Aotearoa became New Zealand, a British colony.
Oceania is what happens when Maori culture meets the modern world. The result is extraordinary contemporary music; a rich palette of new sonic possibilities all freshly stirred for our musical delight.
At the heart of Oceania are Maori instruments, legends, history and language, presented to the world for the first time via the talents of singer/songwriter Hinewehi Mohi and the lead singer of British post-punk band Killing Joke, Jaz Coleman.
Over a decade ago Coleman left England for New Zealand, where he became the Composer in Residence for the Auckland Philharmonia. Coleman also recorded several albums for the Phillips Classics label, during which time he was fostering the idea of recording a contemporary Maori album.
This vague ambition was cemented when Jaz met Hinewehi at a traditional Maori blessing for the opening of a new building – in this case a recording studio.
By the time she met Jaz Coleman, Hinewehi had already established a formidable reputation as a singer/songwriter and as a director/producer for Maori programmes at Television New Zealand. Hinewehi has constantly championed the integrity of Maori culture and its contribution to the fabric of New Zealand.
Released in September 1999, Oceania was the first international Maori album. It has achieved double platinum sales in New Zealand and exceeded sales of 70,000 copies worldwide.
( Exotic and modern tones combined with Hinewehi Mohi’s famous voice melt together into a masterpiece. Every song has its interlude where native instruments appear. This album turns out smooth vibes. DON’T MISS THAT by all means. ) [ O Last.Fm ] | [ HM Last.Fm ]
Probably best known by London gig-goers as the posse behind regular Wednesday club Goonite at the Buffalo Bar in Islington, Wry actually began life many moons ago, back in their homeland of Brazil. Childhood friends Mario (vocals, guitars), Lou (backing vocals, guitars), Chokito (bass) and Renato Bizar (drums), never ones to follow the trend, grew up playing basketball in a country obsessed with football. When it came to music they preferred Jesus & Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine to samba or bossa-nova, and in 1998 they sold their souls to rock’n’roll, called themselves Wry and released their debut Direct.
They quickly built a local following, signed to Brazilian label Monstro and released three albums over five years. They toured Brazil with the likes of Man Or Astroman?, Superchunk, Mudhoney and Make Up, and picked up praise from MTV Brazil who loved them and played their videos. Tim Wheeler from Ash saw them and fell in love, he produced three tracks for their last album (the other tracks were recorded by Strokes producer Gordon Raphael). They also promoted their own festival in Sorocaba/Sao Paulo called Circadelica and played to 4000 people.
2003 the band decided to set up in the UK and split their efforts between London and Sao Paulo. They hooked up with The Subways for a tour and played with bands like The Rakes, The Subways, Ash, Asobi Seksu, The Morning After Girls, The Cribs, Air Formation among others. In the meantime their third album Flames In The Head was released in Brazil and they went back to do their ‘06 In Flames Brazil tour. With the departure of Renato Bizar, in 2007 Andre Z joined the band bringing more flavour to their sound and a vasta range of creativity on writing the new songs.
