[ The Ghost Of 33 ]. Along the highway, somewhere inbetween, maybe even after the highcoast of Norrland, a late summersday in the beginning of a descending decenium, we stumbled upon a old white church, scared and teared on the frontage by the seasons. Close to the sparsely-populated area of Bygdsiljum, where we decided to take a break, stretch our legs after hours driving in a stuffy rental car all morning.

Cafe Americana from a gasstation, some breadloaf, cigarets, Linus got him self some cigars, non branded. This concept was dead, or atleast moldened, we had this feeling in our guts that we had more to give then to face the stage with hollow material that we couldnt put our own beliefs into, we wanted to flip the coin, make something we believed in, and in that maybe face the fact that we would be alone on our journey.

Behind the church, we found this large pile of thrown goods (prodably from a flee market), mostly junk, cloths, old pictures, books, shoes and other things that has been passed away by time. And we stole this trunk from the house of God. Ioseb took its shape the spring after the situation with the trunk, as a try to translate the old fasade of that church, forgotten pictures, seldom read books, lost letters, old tales of folklore, pale paintings, the baltic sea and the harsh climate that haunts us when the summers gone, into music.

We now use this trunk as a case for our FX pedals. With a lack of vengeance, melancholy, anger and hope we bind together our music with great ambient atmospheres and beutifull harmonies in where the thin vocals embraces you as warm hands on a frosty december morning. Linus is gone, without a trace, we guess that he is in great britain somewhere, prodably? Johan replaced him recently, but we are still hangin in there, that is Daniel, Jimmy, Jonatan and Mattias. Uncertain of our goal but convinced that a lot of music will be made, music that we will remember, we will hopefully get our sympathy from out there somewhere. We will bring the trunk with us to heaven.. /Ioseb

The Sudermannian DIY quartet proclaimed as “Ioseb” has in the modest way of fashion unveiled their second phonorecord “Agartha” for it’s inquisitive few. Sprung from the wide and ambient shapes of the debut “the ghost of ’33″ this natively sung sequel has to be seen as a gilt and intimate concentrate of it’s predecessor, by that cause it’s name “Agartha” relates to nothing else then the legendary city that is said to reside in the earth’s core, as a metaphore for the quartets enclosure to their own.

This 28 minute journey divided in six parts takes the listener on a refuge through misty soundwalls, obscure thoughts, fragile dynamics and obstinate rhytm’s, dark but yet enticing, intriguing and frightening. Questioning definitions through emotions, words through meanings, mathers, form’s and shape’s, belief and persuasion, fate and faith.

Cinchel is a drone/ambient guitarist from Chicago. “Quiet Nights, Lonesome Woods” is his latest EP release. This particular one contains no guitars and some buried beats and enough low end drone to really shake your walls. Many of us will also find that “Quiet Nights, Lonesome Woods” works pretty damn well as headphone music and large room listening. The latest EP is where you would want to start but but all means work your way to gather the entire Cinchel catalog.

[ Diamond Is The Rough ]. The eponymous title track is not only the gateway to Diamond In The Rough, but its very morphogenetic core which happens to be embedded in-between a helix of aquatic fractals. Instead of launching with the expected fade-in phase of several seconds and balmy Drone layers, Diamond In The Rough starts in medias res, with a gorgeously bubbling echo-coated fluxion of a moist and profound arpeggio. Textures and tonality burst at the seams in the very first seconds already, and as the architecture is repeated and gets louder over its course, the intensity is charged as well. That this vesiculation is guitar-based is a given in Jason Shanley’s work.

The emerald feeling is soon interpolated with a sun-dappled luminosity of excitatory drones which tower securely above the melting pot. Their infinitesimally overdriven scratches and hazy physiognomy make them curiously present and diffusely untouchable. Soon enough, these layers begin to bubble and oscillate as well. Clinging chimes lead to snoring dragons, the arrangement becomes incredibly louring (or was that luring?) all of a sudden; abyssal bass creeks float through the labyrinthine vaults, a pompous aura of opaqueness reigns. However, since Diamond In The Rough is based on vignettes, this state, while still maintained and resurrected for a few moments, is accompanied by blazingly iridescent and melodious Rave bells which do not seem gelid rather than supercharged with a powerful nostalgia.

When this hypnotic segment wanes, the earthquake-evoking atmosphere is reintroduced, now with a greater impetus than before. Frosty bells gyrate around devastating explosions and rumbling cliffs. Diamond In The Rough, as it turns out, ends with a focus on the devastating roughness. Its progression, the various textures, reverberations, filters and melodies are, in short, an utter delight, a sublime bedlam. [ FULL REVIEW ]

[ Sometime You See Yourself ( Through The Cosmos ) ]. Cinchel’s hour long sojourn into a land where singing wine glasses and treated guitars form peaks and valleys that rival the pulses of dying stars and slowly imploding planets tens of millions of light years away. All heard through an echo chamber that could wrap around the world one thousand times over.

[ Isolation Experiment Vol. I ]. Track one is a composite recording from WNUR own mix and my edirol r-09 that I set on the table next to me while I performed in their studio. The remaining tracks are isolation mixes of what I captured on the laptop during the live set. in the studio the laptop was amplified on through the Vox (top amp in photo). I dont think it did a great job of what was going on so I’ve gone back and made a few tracks using only these loops. Some minor editing and mixing was done in post.

Since 2008, [ Set and Setting ] have been described and categorized as many different things. With a wide range of influences from [ Pink Floyd ] to [ Godspeed You! Black Emperor ] to [ Pelican ] and [ Mono ] a wide range of sounds are combined into one unique blend described on the Tampa community Radio station as “of operatic proportions, epic tragedies told through music alone”.

With a full length in the midst of the creation process, the plan for 2012 is an LP among a seven inch or two. After captivating a strong local following with many shows in the Tampa Bay area with bands like the [ Appleseed Cast ] ~ [ Wolves In The Throne Room ] and music festivals Tropical Heatwave, and Antiwarpt the time to take the music elsewhere is now.

Hi how are you. Pumba is a three-piece band, and we’re from Southern New Jersey, and from Philadelphia. It’s post-rock, or noise-rock, I think, and it’s very loud sometimes and very fun to play. We sometimes sweat when we play, when it’s hot. I play guitar and Dan plays guitar and we both stomp on pedals and twist knobs, and Phil plays drums. We went to Ridgewood, Queens and recorded an EP, live, with Sam Owens from a terrific band called Celestial Shore. It sounds really good, it sounds like it was made by adults, which is nice, and strange, because we’re all graduating from high school next week.

It’s called ‘Keeping Dogs in Houses’ and it’s the warm guts of us so far so have a gander if you’d like. Even though a lot of the tried-and-true post-rock tropes are certainly there (the cavernous build-up on “Cool Tombs”, the searing tremolo picking on “Ice Cream Rat”, etc), Pumba sounds like a band embarrassed of its self-serious label, dressing itself in slinky scrapes of no-wave guitar interplay, dance-beats and blown-out sonics to hide its sulky shoulders…

It isn’t the flashiest brand of post-rock on the block (we’ve so far forgone strings or disembodied vocal samples or what have you, because those things are all kind of hard to fit into the sweaty little North Philadelphia basements where we like to play music in front of people). Hark if you want to: there’s also a really, really pretty film of us playing in one of said basements!!

Music like a walk through surreal pictures. Minimalistic and complex together Harnes Kretzer’s soundscapes are drenched in fieldrecordings, old pianos and analogue synthesizers, which seem to be out of tune in a pleasant way. It’s the relative beauty and the details which make his works unique.

[ Refugium ]. On latest release “Refugium”, Harnes Kretzer dalliances with a graceful array of approaches which make him slightly difficult to pin down. Sometimes, like on opener Hymn, there are shades of Eno, or Stars Of The Lid. It isn’t a dense sound, but certainly absorbing and emotionally affecting, ambient in the truest sense. Sometimes lo-fidelity piano takes the lead, like Nils Frahm at his most tender and reflective. Other tracks – a highlight being the tricklingly delightful “Digital Rain” – are more synthetic creations, but no less preoccupied with describing a tender emotional space.

The power of music to grab your mind and your heart, to take you on an emotional journey less about the destination than the distance travelled is unrivalled. The neo-classical sounds of Germany’s Harnes Kretzer are an excellent example of how powerful quiet ones can sometimes be. __[ Mike Philips (Tru Luv) ].

[ Beauty In Relation ]. As the title suggests beauty is the controverse topic of the second album by Harnes Kretzer. Transient and fragile as beauty may be the smooth ambient sounds are constantly underlayed by repeating fragments of irritating melodies. No sound seems to be perfect in itself. Continuously interrupted the sound fragments grow together to an easily injured universe. The open mind plunges into titles like ‘sunrise’ or ‘sea urchins’ and sinks into a ocean of beauty with sidekicks to its imperfection.

Field recordings and found sounds blend with Ambient music so beautiful it will make your eyes fill with water. [ Harnes Kretzer and Florian von Ameln ]. In this two-track release brought to you by Withering Trees netlabel you can hear Field Recordings of playing children, Drones, chilling Atmospheres and all in all sense of simplicity yet so distinguished it makes your ears cry for joy. Kretzer/v. Ameln deliver two pieces of unimaginable beauty. This is, despite its shortness one of our best releases so far. __[ Withering Trees ].

[ In Search Of The Abysses Of Passion (ep) ]. This is an EP I made during my time in the hospital. Most of the sounds were recorded there (in the church, the catacombs and several places you find on a clinic area). The last track “sümeyya” is dedicated to a beautiful woman I met there. Thanks for the inspiration and thanks to Hubert, a deaf opera singer. You can hear him on the second track, which also gives the title to this work. I spent many evenings with him. I played the piano and he just sang with a passion I never heard before.

[ Seabirds ] is the second “post-rockish” release from musician/composer Nathaniel Noton-Freeman. The three-track EP is characterized by layered finger-style acoustic guitar and Telecaster, dense reverb and delay, and a cheerful, nostalgic, and airy aesthetic.

[ Whorl ] This album was composed, performed, produced, recorded, mixed, mastered, drawn, designed, screened, folded, glued, pressed, and distributed by me. 85% of any donation for this album goes directly to me, a college student who majored in something that makes potential employers shift uncomfortably in their seats. The remaining 15% goes to Bandcamp. However: I do not expect you to pay for my music. I understand that not everybody has the money to pay for albums, and as such I’d rather you listen and enjoy it for free than not hear it at all.

[ Cairn ] I wanted to do something very different for this release. Each track only contains one guitar, as opposed to Whorl which had at most 37. The goal was to develop more music for live performances.

[ DREAM ]. Yet another beautiful release by Nath’. This album was completely self-produced by Nathaniel and released on the 30th of April 2013. Art Sonic is musical output of multi-instrumentalist Richard Lisaj. Richard newest album, “Roadside Sketches”, has been jointly released by No-Source and Acustronica netlabels. “Roadside Sketches” is the first part of the Southwestern trilogy, a project inspired by a 3-week long road trip to the American Southwest ( Colorado, Utah and New Mexico ).

Richard recorded a wealth of material during this trip and also did some field recordings which later, back in his studio, got incorporated into the tracks’ arrangements. Big prairie skies, Rocky Mountain panoramas, desert vistas, ghost towns and ancient Anasazi ruins, all provided inspiration to pick up the guitar and translate sights into notes. We hope you’ll enjoy this first part of Art Sonic’s Southwestern trilogy – music that has been inspired by the mountain streams, rugged beauty of the desert, tales of the Old West and freedom of an open road.

Good thing I managed to take my old beat-up acoustic guitar – even though there was little spaced for it in our tightly packed truck. Big prairie skies, Rocky Mountain panoramas, desert vistas, ghost towns and ancient Anasazi ruins, all inspired me to pick up the guitar and attempt to translate sights into notes. Little ‘roadside sketches’…

My trusty little field recorder allowed me to actually capture some of the nature sounds which later, back home in my studio, got incorporated into some of the tracks. Hopefully these short musical pieces will evoke the feelings and re-create the sights I had in front of me. “Roadside Sketches” has been released jointly by two netlabels: No-Source and Acustronica.

Less than half a year after the release of their debut, Damascus returns with a new ep, ‘Of Whom I Always Think’ – three epic instrumental tracks that interweave unyielding heavy metal and glittering post-rock. The album is inspired by the indomitable spirit and personal hardships of famed inventor Nikola Tesla.

Their previous release, Salutations, Distant Satellite! was well-received both by casual listeners and critics. Head Like A Hole music said Salutations offered “fine examples of solid, uncompromising and melodic post rock.” According to TheSirensSound, the songs were “compositionally complex and truly set them apart”. Pushing their sound beyond its limits, the New Jersey quartet’s new material is both heavier and more reserved, where extended song structures unfold layers of expansive melodies and intense riffs with focus and clarity.

Damascus worked with producer and engineer Doug Rockwell for the second time, further refining the sound they explored on Salutations. Footage of parts being tracked, along with audio clips of the new ep, can be found in videos the band recently made available on their Youtube account.

The band’s music has been compared with that of [ Caspian ] ~ [ And So I Watch You From Afar ] ~ [ Explosions in the Sky ] and [ Rosetta ]. October 1st marks the release of the new ep “Of Whom I Always Think” which is available for free stream and download at their Bandcamp website.

The post-metal quartet hailing from New Jersey has completed recording their new album Heights. On the record, damascus continues to explore the territory where crushing heaviness and shimmering post-rock intersect, over the course of five tracks absolutely bursting at the seams with dynamism and passion. Time changes, ambience, and heavily textured layers abound as the group weaves together influences as diverse as Rinoa, Vessels, Rosetta, and Stars of the Lid. The record was recorded and mixed by producer Frank Marra ( Gaslight Anthem, Mild Mannered Rebel ) at Treehouse Sound, and mastered by Mehdi Safa ( *shels, *Ancients ) at Purple Buffalo Studios.

This is the third true damascus release, following 2011’s Salutations, Distant Satellite! and Of Whom I Always Think, reviews for which were glowing. SputnikMusic proclaimed: “It shouldn’t be possible to make post-rock this good after only a few months as a band, but somehow, Damascus has done it.” The early records earned the band a feature in the ‘Unsigned and Unholy’ segment on Metalsucks, where they were favorably compared with groups such as Russian Circles, Junius, and If These Trees Could Talk. [ All Is Within ] is a multi-instrumentalist and photographer ( involving mainly landscapes and live music portraits, mostly for webzines ) since 1991. That said [ All Is Within ] as an instrumental project has been around since 2008. The new mini album “We All Need The Moon” is more a sort of celestial voyage focused on various elements from progressive rock, post rock, metal to ambient music. The moniker [ A.I.W ] also cherish classical composition and impressionism instrumental music in which lush harmonies, progressive rhythms, and unusual tonal colors are used to evoke moods and impressions.

Two years of work had been necessary to create this piece cause I work alone, in the dark ( and managing astro-photography was sometimes really hard too ). My music is set on free download and by all means feel free to distribute as well. Full download in this case is highly recommended because the illustrations are a part of the message. Mellow, instrumental, post rock. Wacky Southern Current’s ” Like The Wind Within The Hollow Tree ” is neither wacky nor southern. Marco Cervellin of Italy plays most of the instruments himself creating a hushed, minimal, peaceful landscape of down tempo, acoustic music. From the electronic tinged opening track, ” I Took a Journey ” to the ambient feel of ” Unterkircher ” this album sways without ever straying too far.

It is very much a cohesive unit. “Like The Wind Within The Hollow Tree” harkens similarities to [ Explosions In The Sky's ] quieter material, [ Album Leaf's ] early work, as well as netlabel musicians such as [ Cantaloup ] and [ Nic Bommarito ]. This is truly a beautiful suite of music for a quiet Sunday soundtrack.

“Like The Wind Within The Hollow Tree” ~ LISTENING IS BELIEVING HERE. How did mellow post-rock music without any massive wah wah and distortions get so good. The above review mentioned some good references but to top it up the first band that come to my mind while listening to “Like The Wind Within The Hollow Tree” is one of the best medio-core sound you guys probably all know [ Adelaide / Small Sails ]. Perfect for a Sunday afternoon with a cold beer. AMAZINGLY GOOD. Oh by the way… the header picture on top of the page describe the music ~ this album perfect.

[ In a Realm of Uncertain Summer ]. Wacky Southern Current returns to No-Source for a new album of hauntingly beautiful instrumental music. “In a Realm of Uncertain Summer” sees Marco Cervellin find middle ground between instrumental soundtracks, acoustic moods, and post rock sensibilities.

The title track kicks off the same vibe given by Air’s “The Virgin Suicides” soundtrack. The instrumentation is top notch as apparent on “Eaten by Your Own Sun”. The slow progression of guitars and strings on “West of the Dam” slowly unfolds until the track “The Nearest Star” take over with a sound reminiscent of early Blue States or Grantby. “Naked Mountain Song” paints a picture of a lazy ride over hills and valleys with its bass line and soft electronic percussion work.

“Dream Sequence” and “Eventide” bring the album to a quiet ending with gorgeous, beat less, nearly contemporary classical music. This is certainly another brilliant release from Wacky Southern Current and an increase in compositional intricacy from Marco Cervellin. Cover photo by [ Pablo Hache ]

SCKE// Ornaments. This is an obscure 7″ from 2004 that has been reissued by KIKSGFR.NET. The label is fairly recently established to work with a very primitive kind of electronics and noise. SCKE// Ornaments is just an example of this. Originally recorded in mono sampled tape cuts and arranged with an ancient sequencer. This 2 track is presented on heavyweight 7″ vinyl and includes a passage from Bernard Leech’s classic text, The Unknown Craftsman. Certainly now sounding of its era this is nonetheless an obscure gem of composition.

“Raise the Banner, Lower the Hills” is the latest release from St. Paul, Minnesota based musician Bob Kriva. “Raise the Banner…” continues a trend towards heavier, more electronic-based synths and beats, a significant departure from previous piano-based ambient compositions.

While the tone and instrumentation are heavier than on previous albums, the piano remains an integral part of the music, often leading the melodies forward towards dramatic conclusions, surrounded by layers of shimmering synths. Inspired by classic science fiction novels, as well as modern video game music, “Raise the Banner” is a modern take on the sci-fi genre, combining elements of ambient, electronic, and post-rock music into a compact 7-track album.

Sisilisko – Prepare to die / Under your skin

The night of the lizards

During the nights between sundays and mondays, the only time when our whole civilization stand still, we tend to sleep very light. We never go into deep sleep – we get stuck between two sleep stages – like children suffering from night terrors. We crawl like lizards between our sheets and dream unpleasent dreams where we travel through deep, silent and dimmed forests; through landscapes of crawling caterpillars, rottening carrions and growing fungus.

In Finland these nights are called sisiliskojen yö – the night of the lizards. That is where Sisilisko came from. Sisilisko was born in the forest, ate the maggots and the mushrooms and found shelter in the dead animals. Sisilisko was nursed to sleep in the seagulls squeeks.

Sisilisko has created a musical expression for the dark and unexplored places in our minds; where the daylight never reaches. Where we all are equally small and insignificant. Where death always is present. Where nothing is what we assume it to be.

The debut single Prepare to die / Under your skin was digitally released in may 2013. With one foot in american folk and the other in doom- and black metal, the dark elements of the genres gets combined, and recreates the barren fairytale landscape that Sisilisko once came from.

While playing with numerous bands around the Northern California area, Justin Howard, worked quietly behind the curtains on a solo project called “Metazen”. Moving form instrument to instrument since the age of 13 and stumbling across Logic Pro at the age of 15, Metazen had the means of composing the incessant sounds in his head.

With influences spanning across a wide range of genres, [ GYBE ] ~ [ Sole ] ~ [ El-P ] ~ [ NIN ] ~ [ Battle of Mice ] ~ [ RATM ] and [ Isis ] Metazen blended vibrations with chaos and released “Oh Great Sun, Nourish Her Rotting Roots EP” in June 2010.

A conceptual release, entailing the story of three pyschopomps as they told their story of the long forgotten planet called earth and it’s mothers many suicides. With an interest in storytelling, science fiction, and gritty, glitchy, and brooding music Metazen dove into the world of experimental hip hop. Still involved with another band, Metazen didn’t grace the stage with his presence until a year later.

In July 2011, Metazen released “The Conscious Cicatrix EP” crafting his style even more with influences from the filthy bass realm of dubstep. Lyrically, The Conscious Cicatrix, amplifies Metazen’s own thoughts and interests covering topics such as mind control, alien abduction, stimulated realties, and terraforming.

Metazen plans to grab 2011 by the balls with new music every month emerging from his new label DoomSoon Records, in hopes of a true model of fan to artist connection and a protest against corporate labels, co-found with a friend and fellow like minded hip hop artist Dysmanic.

[ Oh Great Sun, Nourish Her Rotting Roots ]. On the 1st track ” 0100100110 ” I thought [ Metazen ] took a slightly different approach but as the 2nd piece kicks in, it immediately round up with [ The Conscious Cicatrix ]. This earlier rec’ is just as good as the latest title and on a trip-hop / rap note [ Metazen ] definitely goes as HIGHLY RECOMMEND. The high of this short EP goes to “The Ghost Dance of Cosmic Tongues”.

[ The Conscious Cicatrix ] And here is a Trip-hop / Hip-hop album you definitely might want to have a go. Musical / instrumental and lyrics wise ALL TRACKS on this album are simply excellent and trippy. CHECK IT OUT LADS as this is probably one of the best form of rhyming lyrics delivered rhythmically over a musical backdrop of sampling.

[ Collected Scabs Vol. 1 ] Metazen is a one Rap / Trip-hop sound I’ve heard and liked from the very beginning. [ Collected Scabs Vol. 1 ] may not be as evoking and appealing as [ The Conscious Cicatrix ] or [ Oh Great Sun, Nourish Her Rotting Roots ] but the overall outcome based on the quoted tags still brings a combination of an uplift edifying and obscure atmosphere. The album also involved a couple of mainstream songs like [ Heart Of Glass ] and [ Only Girl ] but needless to say with a touch of [ Metamix ] mainstream suddenly becomes underground. Again… Have a go here. Totally worthy.

Overlee is the brainchild and solo musical project of Made Indar Mahardian, the bass player of Jakarta-based band Little Space Donkey. Taking influences from his musical heroes, this project culminates in the form of a ambient instrumental music that’s sure to appeal to anyone who appreciates music, daydreaming, and nostalgia.

Through this new EP, he wants to show that poems dont have to be told in the form of words and lyrics, they can also be told through music and simple melodies. Unlike the previous EPs, this one took 4 months to finish simply because he put lots of attention into the details. The results are three songs that hopefully can create an atmostphere of solitude to escape to in the middle of your busy day. Different Kind of Poems is his third EP, the previous were As Lover Bleeds (2010) and September (2011).

Ian Hawgood creates music with an effortless flow and intelligent, minimalist programming aesthetic that lends itself to the art of the movie soundtrack. With each piece contained in Soundtrack [ To A Film In My Head Which Will Never Get Made ] Ian constructs a visual picture in the mind, making use of everything from moaning violins to ethereal, synthesized drones.

Ranging from ambient contemplations to subtly beat driven melancholy, his work offers the most complete experience when taken in as a whole. From the eerie scratchy synth of A Man and His Lover… to the mesmerizing tonal play of End Credits To a Movie…, Ian crafts one beautiful tune after another.

Ian Hawgood is a resident of tokyo and london. he likes to record on reel-to-reel, four-track tape, field recorder and/or his computer. He enjoys using piano, pump organ, mellotron, vibraphone, rhodes, guitar, old tube amps and other mostly vintage equipment. he curates the home normal, tokyo droning and nomadic kids republic labels. he really loves tea, old video games, silent films, polaroid, holga, argus, low light and faded colours.

Ian Hawgood & Friends – Wolven (A Modern Interpretation). Hibernate would perhaps not be where it is today without ‘Wolfskin’ by Ian Hawgood, our inaugural release back in 2009. Wolfskin referenced a series of nightmares Ian had as a child, focusing on elements of dreams and violence by marrying beauty with the harsh. Ian Hawgood has immersed himself in musical projects for longer than he cares to remember; in recent years he has released through the likes of Experimedia, Dragon’s Eye and his own Home Normal label as well as through several netlabels. Increasingly, Ian has been collaborating with other artists – including Jason Corder (Offthesky), Tim Martin (Maps and Diagrams), Danny Norbury, Ryo Nakata (Ryonkt) and Clem Leek.

It is from this penchant for collaboration that Ian set about reworking Wolfskin, enlisting Aaron Martin to help him reinvent the project. The eventual fruits of their labour yielded ‘Wolven (A Modern Interpretation)’ which features Aaron’s cello alongside further layers of organ, keys and guitar fed through various tape reel machines. Wolven doesn’t just portray the original recordings from Wolfskin in a different light – it also takes another look at the concept of dreams and nightmares. This time, the album strives to literally tread the pathways in Ian’s dreams – not without its terrifying moments along the way but always accompanied by a comfort pillow to keep you from harm. The dream-like serenity of Wolfskin remains, joined this time by kaleidoscopic visions of stars, night and never ending bottomless lakes filled with stars, both actual and reflected. Despite the obvious darkness, a child-like innocence prevails.

A split release between Hibernate and Komu, Wolven (A Modern Interpretation) is a double disc package limited edition of 500. Disc 1 is a reworking with Aaron Martin on cello, and mixed in with interpretations by Dag Rosenqvist, Spheruleus, Pillowdiver, y0t0, and Hakobune. Mastered by Rafael Irisarri. The second disc is an entire album reworked by Brock Van Wey aka bvdub.

Since Ian Hawgood sets the musical bar as high as can be, and doesn’t create anything remotely approaching standard, you can be sure of special music. Across years, across periods, Wolven will, with all probability, still sound pretty amazing fifty years down the line. – Fluid Radio

With an electronic/psychedelic sound, The Last Sound made their live debut as a machines/live drums one-off two-piece at the legendary Lazybird night in Dublin. Ever since, a sizable and diverse catalogue of output has been building up including four albums, three EPs and a slew of compilation tracks, remixes, live mp3s etc. spread across various labels both in Ireland and abroad.

Outside of The Last Sound, Barry has performed a number of times on stage as part of ex-Can vocalist Damo Suzuki’s never ending tour band, also appearing on his 2009 live album One More Universe. He is also one half of elusive psyche-drone merchants Whirling Hall Of Knives, formed in 2006 with Trensmat/Nute founder Magnetize. They have appeared on The Wire magazine’s influential Wire Tapper compilation series.

[ Fina/Cold/Fire EP ]. The 3rd EP from The Last Sound. ‘Fire Spun’ refines into a joyous, daylight melancholy – at once immensely majestic, deeply comforting and sweetly infectious. ‘Cold Is The Brittle Hand’ shimmers with a brief meticulous sweep of platinum and vocals of glossolalia that flow serenely into ‘Fina Rotore’ – a glorious shimmer-pop which swoops and floats and morphs into a subtle space-pop drone.

An unnamed, un-ordered jumble of parts of these three tracks were then given to a handpicked collection of artists to remix. The results are blended into a 30 minute, 9 track mix, with segues between the tracks synthesized by Whirling Hall of Knives (WHOK). Gland & Conduit (aka Meljoann and Herv) open it up by re-contextualizing digital residue into a variety of melodic & rhythmic structures. Gauzy glitch and crackle swarm over a pulsing drone into the first of four otherworldly WHOK segues. Ikeaboy takes the melody of ‘Fire Spun’ and produces a wonderfully stripped-down remix – foreboding and sublime. After WHOK segue #2, John Cohen (one half of the awesome Dead Fader) produces a deep mix of textural & emotional feel. WHOK segue #3 fades into the Magnetize mix which opens with a maelstrom of murkiness before a rumbling bass drum arises out of the atmospheric eeriness and the track opens up to a glacial dirge – strangely melodic and dreamlike. Finally WHOK segue #4 leads us to the Shaolin Wooden Men (one alias of Australian underground legend Ollie Olsen) mix – a textural soundscape full of ambient shimmer, gently oscillating melody, mysterious noises, soothing drones, and occasional beats that sound sampled from a mad scientist’s laboratory – and amazing it is too.

When ah were a lad, shoe gaze was all the rage. Sonic Youth were the now, My Bloody Valentine were the kings of cool and every indie band worth their salt finished their set in a skull splitting wall of fuzzy chaos. But then that giant noisy wave crashed and went quiet. Bands went for clarity and the meaningful buck while prog turned off the delay and got technical. However, it never truly left us. Every now and then a band would pop up and remind us what was great about bands with guitars that had the washing machine in a cave sound, sub sub bass, cheap 80s drum machines and mumbled vocals. And now Last Sound has popped up to answer the call.

This is truly brilliant. It’s perfectly executed, if such a thing can be said about shoe gaze, and it just feels like days gone by. Songs take their time to bloom, vocals are more instrumentation than statement, bass lines pull the mood along, synths envelope, modulate and texturise, drums try their best not be noticed. You’ve heard all the parts before on b-sides from the likes of Cranes, My Bloody Valentine, Loop, The Cure and even Ride, but it lightens the soul to be reminded how great this music was and how great it can be again as evident by this release.”
